Research with Vulnerable Populations and Sensitive Topics
Research involving vulnerable populations and sensitive topics requires thoughtful methodological planning. While these issues often overlap, a study may involve one, the other, or both. Each presents distinct methodological and ethical considerations that should be addressed during study design, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Research with Vulnerable Populations
Recruitment, consent, interviewing, data collection, and analysis should all reflect the experiences, capabilities, and circumstances of those participating in the research. In other words, the methods should adapt to the participants, not the participants to the methods. Through years of research with adults living with chronic and serious illness, family caregivers, and health care professionals, combined with my background in psychology, I have developed an understanding of common methodological challenges and practical strategies to manage them. I can help investigators:
- Tailor study procedures to the needs and circumstances of a particular population
- Develop data collection approaches that minimize participant burden
- Interpret findings within the context of participants' lived experiences
- Address ethical and practical challenges throughout the research process
Conducting Research on Sensitive Topics
Some research topics are emotionally difficult to discuss, such as serious illness, caregiving, end of life, grief, uncertainty, and stress among health care professionals. Yet understanding these experiences is essential. With thoughtful planning and appropriate techniques, meaningful and ethically sound research can be conducted.
Research interviews are not therapy, although participants may derive personal benefit from sharing their experiences. For investigators who are also health care professionals, it can be challenging to balance compassionate communication with the scientific purpose of the interview.
Drawing on my background in psychology and experience conducting research on sensitive topics, I have adapted counseling techniques for use in research interviews. I can help investigators:
- Develop interview guides for sensitive topics
- Prepare interviewers to navigate emotionally charged conversations
- Establish study protocols that support interviewer wellbeing and self-care
- Maintain boundaries between research and clinical or therapeutic interactions while prioritizing participant safety
